IEPE Status by Stig Munk-Nielsen

March 2017 the IEPE project ends, what are the results until now? The vision is power products being 20 percent more cost effective, with 20 percent reduced volume and weight

Former IEPE DTU PhD student Mickey Madsen has managed to co-found a spin-off company with support from DTU and venture capital based on a good idea and a high number of rewards and research papers. All the best wishes for many successful year’s to the new company.

Three IEPE PhDs have graduated: Helong Li, Alexander Anton and Mickey Madsen. They are all occupied in new jobs.
The IEPE partner company’s demonstrator hardware is well under way – and show great promise to fulfill the IEPE vision. The demonstrator’s will be presented at an internal workshop in the summer of 2016. Ideas are being matured and are moving up on the technology ladder.

Vestas, Grundfos, Danfoss and KK Wind Solutions are leading the demonstrator’s.
Universities and partners also co-works on building new hardware demonstrating GaN and SiC device performance and establishing package laboratories. This work is described in the 123 papers published by the IEPE project. Including astonishing high efficiency of GaN based converters made by SDU, with very high power density and a design of compact kW converters that do not need heatsinks.

At AAU a new component package laboratory is being established, the machines are currently getting installed, and SiC power modules are designed and built.

We are proud of our cooperation across university and company boarders. We hope to capture the IEPE vision and deliver knowhow and new knowledge to be used in intelligent efficient power electronic converters.

Outreach activities include two new videos giving an insight to our workshop, research and cooperation between university and company. Please also look at the description of IEPE electronic presenting details on activities and our videos and other press material on the www.iepe.et.aau.dk site.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
